Relationship between isocitrate lyase activity in germinating seedlings and chilling sensitivity

Isocitrate lyase (ICL), one of the key enzymes active in glyoxysomes during germination of oilseeds, was inhibited by 34% when germinating seedling of sunflower were exposed to chilling temperature (5.C) for six h prior to homogenization. However, in other seeds like pea, muskmelon and yellow sarson, the activity remained more or less unaffected after the treatment. The inhibitory effect was found to be specific as the activity of isocitrate dehydrogenase remained unaltered in treated seedling compared to untreated ones. The depression in ICL activity was partly overcome when seedlings were treated with GA3 (0.1 M) prior to low temperature exposure. Thus, there appears to be a correlation between depression in ICL activity in seedlings at low temperature and their chilling sensitivity.
