Influence of sodium chloride and magnesium chloride induced soil salinization on germination, nitrate reduction and dry matter accumulation in winged bean plants

A pot culture experiment was conducted in medium black clay and sandy loam soils to evaluate the influence of sodium chloride (NaCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) induced soil salinization on germination, trifoliate leaf nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and dry matter (DM) accumulation in winged bean plants, var. Nigerian local. The seed germination was inhibited by both NaCl and MgCl2- induced salinization in medium black clay as well as in sandy loam soils. The trifoliate leaf NR activity declined with incremental additions of both the salts in these soils. The adverse effects of NaCl salinization appeared to be more pronounced than that of MgCl2 salinization. Further, the inhibition of trifoliate leaf NR activity was greater in sandy loam than in medium black clay soil. Soil salinity also reduced the nodule number and nodule NR activity as well as DM accumulation. Plants raised in medium black clay soil showed better performance as evidenced by higher DM production than that of sandy loam soil.
