Phenotypic stability of yield and yield components in pearl millet.

Forty genotypes of pearl millet were assessed for stability under four different environments for five characters. The major portion of G x E interaction was linear in nature for ear length and girth, 1000-grain weight and grain yield/plant and non-linear component was grerater in magnitude for number of grain/cm2. The genotypes 9401 and 9417 for ear length, 9403, 9430 and 9431 for ear girth, 1596 for 1000-grain weight, 9408, 9418, 9420 and 9429 for number of grains/cm2 and 9401, 9405 and 9422 for grain yield/plant possess average stability and showed wider adaptability. Six for ear length, nine for ear girth, seven for 1000 grain weight and number of grains/cm2 each and three for grain yield showed specific adaptability to favourable environmental conditions. Six genotypes for ear length, nine for ear grith, six for 1000-grain weight and three for number of grains/cm2 exhibited specific adaptability to unfavourable environmental conditions. None of the genotypes was found to be ideal with average stability for all the characters. However 9401, 9405 and 9422 which possessed average stability and showed wider adaptability for grain yield and also displayed either average, above average or below average stability for other characters. The genotypes 9408, 9410 and ICTP-8203 exhibited above average stability for grain yield and also expressed stability for other characters. From the stability analysis, it can be conclued that the genotypes 9401, 9405, 9408, 9410, 9422 and ICTP-8203 showing stability for grain yield along with one or more yield components could be considered in future breeding programme so as to develop stable population/hybrid for grain yield and other components in pearl millet.
