The importance of chlorine as a micronutrient for plants has been recognised only of late. Some crops plants show distinct deficiency symptoms for chloride. But, it is relatively non toxic to most plants even at higher concentration and especially, most salt tolerant crops are capable of accumulating large amount of C1- in their tissues. Plants absorb chloride from soil and it has been found to interact with N mineralization and nitrification processes as well as availability and uptake of phosphate. Chloride also interacts with various diseases of crops. It improves the quality as well as yield of crops like wheat, potato, coconut and rice. Crop response to chloride may be predicted through plant tissue test at appropriate growth stages. Potassium chloride is the usual fertilizer for soil application of the element.
