In the routine indexing of seed stocks against viruses, potato virus M (PVM) was encountered in 1998-99 with the introduction of ELISA for PVM by using imported kits. An incidence of 13.9% was recorded in Kufri Lalima in the first year which was followed by Kufri Chandramukhi (13.2%) & Kufri Badshah (12.3%). In subsequent years (1999-2000 & 2000-2001), the incidence was reduced to 0.0-4.9%. In newly released varieties the incidence of PVM was as high as 16.6% in Kufri Pukhraj and 8.1% in Kufri Anand while it was reduced next year by 50.75%. The virus was detected in more number of plants when leaves were tested in comparison to sprout samples indicating that ELISA of leaf samples was more effective for detection of virus.
