Field trials for studying local populations of cocksfoot were carried out at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture in Dotnuva in 1999-2000. It was established that local populations of cocksfoot have a suffciently great diversity of characteristics and can be used for the development of new varieties. The plants of populations No.2130 from the Kedainiai and No.2125 from the Trakai districts are characterised by high winter-hardiness. The plants of population No.2132 from the Kedainiai district are notable for the greatest intensity of spring growth. The late-ripening populations No.2138 and 2140 from the Silute district are of interest as sources of initial material for the breeding of late-ripening varieties. A number of plants has been selected for breeding purposes according to the productivity of dry matter, which essentially exceeded the population's average plant productivity of dry matter - by 59.4-99.9%. Mathematical analysis allowed to establish a correlation between the characteristics and distribute four groups of populations differing among themselves within the whole coplex of characteristics.
