Oviposition preference of the cabbage webworm: Hellula undalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Different host-plants were tested in laboratory and field trials to determine oviposition preference of the cabbage pests Hellula undalis. Moths preferred to lay eggs on white mustard (Sinapis alba (L.) Selinda), followed by brown canadian mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czem et Coss, and varieties of pak-choi (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis). Secondary plant compounds known as glucosinolates (GS), and their breakdown products from cabbage varieties were analyzed using HPLC and GC-MS techniques. GS compounds and their content differed among species. Content was highest in S. alba with progressive lower concentrated detected in B. juncea and B. chinensis. The aromatic GS sinalbin and glucotropaeolin were detected in S. alba. In B. juncea the alkenyl GS sinigrin dominated, whereas in B. chinensis varieties indoyl and alkenyl GS predominated. The application of 10-4 M sinigrin (allyl-GS) induced oviposition on a non-host-plants (string bean) by females of H. undalis. Further studies showed that plant damage reduced egg laying on pak-choi and H. undalis females preferred intact host-plants
