Sprouting behavior and biochemical changes in yam tubers (Dioscorea alata L.) treated with combinations of GSH, ethrel and sodium metabisulfite or hydrogen peroxide

Chemical combinations of glutathione (GSH), ethrel and sodium metasibulfite or hybrogen peroxide were studied to influence sprouting in yam tubers. Combination of ethrel and sodium metabisulfite significantly increased the incidence of yam sprouting during the first 2 months of storage while GSH and sodium metabisulfite combinations inhibited the growth of sprouts after 2 months of storage at ambient conditions. Number of sprouts per tuber, respiration rates and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities were not significantly affected by chemical treatments. Ethylene content was only affected by chemical treatments at the initial stage. GSH contents was lower in all chemically treated yam tubers for the first 3 months of storage. GA-like substances decreased drastically in yam tubers treated with combinations of ethrel and sodium metabisulfite. Batatasin-like substances were found in exudates from R sub f values ranging from 0.13-0.50
