Effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment on flowering and podding at different development stages in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)

Rapid increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration which has brought about the greenhouse effect is also a serious problem in agricultural production. The approach was to determine the effect of high CO2 concentration (700 mol CO2 mol-1) on flowering, podding and yield by exposing soybean plant to CO2 enriched atmospheres at different developmental stages. The increase in number of flowers was observed in treatment through out the full growth stage but not in other treatments. Furthermore, the number of flowers on the higher raceme increased in treatments of the reproductive stage. The number of pods per plant showed the same tendency to the number of flowers. However, there was no significant difference in the rate of podding among all treatments at the end of flowering. The results suggested that the increase in flowers and pods on higher racemes in all treatments at reproductive stage would be expected to cause the increase in grain yield
