Supplementary values of dried poultry manure and Leucaena to corn silage for early lactating cows

Twenty-four multiparous cows were used to evaluate supplementary values of varying levels of dried poultry manure (DPM) and ipil-ipil leaf meal (ILM) in corn silage-based diets for early lactation. Corn silage was maintained at 60 percent of total diets dry matter. In the concentrate portion, the following levels were used: Diet 1 - control, no DPM, nor ILM; Diet 2 - 30 percent DPM; Diet 3 - 50 percent DPM; Diet 4 - 30 percent ILM; Diet 5 - 50 percent ILM and Diet 6 - 25 percent DPM + 25 percent ILM. There were no significant differences between treatment means in daily dry matter, energy and protein intake and liveweight changes. The cows receiving 30 percent DPM diet (T2) had a positive liveweight gain and produced more milk (P0.05) compared to those on other diets. No significant differences between treatment means were found on butterfat, protein total solids and solids non-fat contents. Analysis of organoleptic testing data proved that feeding milking cows with DPM and/or ILM did not impart off flavor into the milk. While T2 produced early manifestation of postpartum estrus, relatively more services per conception were required by the cows receiving this diet. The inclusion of 30 percent DPM in the concentrate of early lactating cows was found profitable (P0.05) over feed cost.
