Effects of cobalt-60 gamma radiation on the reproductive potential of Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck (Mollusca: Gastropoda)

Three day-old egg masses and adult males of Pomacea canaliculata were exposed to 0, 10, 50 GY and 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 Gy Co sup 60 gamma radiation, respectively, to determine its effect on incubation period and percent hatching of the eggs, the number of eggs laid by the females mated with the irradiated males and structure of the testis. The mean incubation period of the Gy irradiated eggs (15.2 +- 0.37 days) was significantly longer than those of the control (11.0 +- 0.37 days) and 10 Gy irradiated eggs (11.0 +- 0.32 days). The mean percent hatching decreased with increasing dose. The eggs exposed to 50 Gy Lambda-rays did not hatch. The survival of the irradiated males, decreased with increasing dose. Incubation period was delayed in the progeny of the irradiated males. Egg hatching likewise significantly decreased with increasing dose. Eggs laid by females mated with 200 Gy irradiated completely failed to hatch. Light microscopy of the irradiated testis revealed a decrease in the population of spermatogonia with increasing dose. Several macrophages were also observed in the irradiated testis. Moreover, electron microscopy showed a higher frequency in the occurrence of spermatozoa in the testis of those exposed to 100 and 200 Gy Lambda-rays
