Optimum storage conditions for Casuarina equisetifolia and casuarina junghuhniana seed determined from an eight-year storage trial

The effects of three storage temperatures on longevity of Casuarina equisetifolia and C. junghuhniana seed were investigated. Seed from two provenances of C. equisetifolia and two provenances of C. junghuhniana were stored separately in glass vials within sealed laminated plastic bags at -18 deg C, 3 deg C and 25 deg C for a period of eight and six years, respectively. For a bulked seedlot of C. equisetifolia germination declined with time at all three-temperature storage regimes, although most noticeably at 25 deg C, where germination dropped from 37.0% to less than 1% over eight years. The most reliable temperature regime for prolonging the life of C. equisetifolia seed (9% moisture content) for six years or more appears to be in airtight packaging at 3 deg C. By contrast, C. junghuhniana seed maintained a relatively stable viability across all three-temperature storage regimes. This species recorded a 58% to 50% decline in germination percent at all three temperature regimes over six years of storage. C. junghuhniana seed with moisture content of less than 9% can be stored successfully at 25 deg C in airtight packaging for at least six years
