Dessication of Shorea contorta seeds were conducted to determine the effect of drying temperature and duration of drying on germination and moisture content (MC) of seeds and its seed parts. The lost of moisture was found to be maximum and earliest in the seedcoat and calyx cap remnants, slower in the cotyledon and slowest in the embryo at 30 deg C than at 26 deg C. Changes in the germination of the seeds were insignificant after two weeks of drying at 26 deg C and at 30 deg C which was reduced significantly to 96.5-80% and 91.5-47%, respectively after the third week. Low germination of 8% was recorded for seeds dried at 30 deg C after the 5th week. Storage of dewinged and winged seeds at 26 deg C and 30 deg C was also conducted. No significant differences on MC of both winged and dewinged seeds were observed after the 35th day of storage at 30 deg C, although for both treatments, MC was reduced significantly as storage was prolonged to 35 days. For seeds stored at 26 deg C, MC of dewinged seeds did not vary, but the MC of winged seeds went down to only 40% on the 35th day of sampling. Similarly, germination differences between dewinged and winged seeds were insignificant at 30 deg C. However, as storage increased to 35 days, rapid reductions in germination were observed for both treatments. For seeds stored at 26 deg C, higher germination of 96 and 100% were noted for winged and dewinged seeds, respectively, after 21 days of storage. Significant reduction were only recorded after the 28th day of storage.
