On the bases of the findings of this study, the following generalization could be made: a strategy to develop the dairy industry even at the backyard farm level should consider the direct introduction of dairy type animals. This would result in more immediate increase in milk production and have impact on farmer incomes and area productivity can more than adequately handle dairy type animals and elicit good performance from them has already been proven. Production performance is even relatively better under the personalized care and attention of the rural dairy farmers. The defined problems of limited number and high costs dairy animals and inadequate financing schemes to bring these animals into the rural sector should be considered in mapping out strategies to introduce dairy animals among backyard farmers. On the whole, the direct introduction of dairy animals to farmer under backyard levels of management is a feasible proposition. What has to be worked out are the adequate financing mechanisms to enable the transfer, not of culls, but of quality dairy animals to the rural setting
