Performance and economic evaluation of Holstein Friesian cows in semi-commercial farms of Batangas province, Philippines
2001
Devkota, B.M. | Robles, A.Y.
This study evaluated productive and reproductive performance and economy of milk production of Holstein Friesian cows in semi-commercial conditions of Batangas. For the whole population, mean for 305 days milk production was 1926, 2687, 2756, and 3004 kg for the first to the fourth lactation, respectively. Production performance of cows from the Magnolia Dairy Farm and farm-born cows was comparable with imported stock. Average lactation length was 282, 309, 388, and 279 days from the first to the fourth lactation, respectively. Mean age at first calving was 920 days and calving interval was 470, 426, and 382 days after the first, second and third calving, respectively. Average days open were 203, 156, and 97 days after the first, second and third calving, respectively. There were years when farms were making profit; there were also years when they were losing. However, the magnitude of loss was bigger than the profit. The cost of production of one liter of milk ranged from Php2.94 to Php4.44 in different farms. In order to attain a break even point, 4424, 17420, and 43819 kg of incremental milk production would be required for Nemar, Max and RB farms, respectively. Considering all farms as one population, productive and reproductive performances were satisfactory. Financially, all farms were losing on the average; nevertheless, Neman was more stable than other farms
