The present study is a part of investigation involving identification and isolation of the cyanobacteria from coastal waters of Karachi. As reports on the distribution of cyanobacterial epiphytes in the coastal areas of Pakistan are scarce, research on cyanobacteria associated with macroalgae was undertaken. A total of 63 species of cyanobacteria were identified as epiphytes on six species of macroalgae. Most cyanobacteria were from the orders Chroococcales and Nostocales and only a small number of species were found to belong to Chamaesiphonales and Pleurocapsales. Cyanobacterial species showed a variable capacity to grow in various types of media. Also, some cyanobacteria were observed specifically on particular algae, while others were common on all species. A number of cyanobacterial species were able to grow in nitrogen deficient media, and therefore may be considered as putative nitrogen fixing species.
