Comparative performance of Holstein-Friesian, vs. Holstein Friesian x Brahman crossbred and labor management analysis of a dairy farm in Pampanga [Philippines]

Forty lactating Holstein-Friesian and twenty one Holstein Friesian x Brahman crossbred of the same age were used to compare growth, productive and reproductive performances. Labor management analysis of the farm was also made. Birth weight, weanling weight, yearling weight, daily gain at weaning and daily gain at yearling of purebred Holstein-Friesian and crossbred Holstein Friesian x Brahman calves were: 37.19 kg, 79.68 and 74.46 kg, 163.41 and 165.19 kg and 0.41 and 0.39 kg, 0.33 and 0.36 kg, respectively. Differences were not significant. The purebred Holstein-Friesians lost more weight (-19.23) than the crosses (-9.24 kg) during lactation (P0.05). Actual milk yield on first lactation, 305-day milk yield on first lactation, fat percentage and ash percentage of Holstein-Friesian and crossbred Holstein-Friesian x Brahman were: 2557.60 and 1568.31 kg, 2758.75 and 2374.50 kg, 2044.62 and 1347.85 kg, 2.54, 0.67 percent, respectively. Differences between means were significant (P0.05). There were no differences observed in the length of first lactation, total solids, SNF and crude protein. Gestation periods for first and second calving of Holstein-Friesian and crossbred Holstein Friesian x Brahman were not significantly different. Purebred Holstein Friesians had significantly lower (P0.05) calving interval (415.94 days) and days open (141.33 days) than the crossbreds (508.22 and 231.11 days, respectively). However, number of services per conception (2.62) was significantly higher (P0.05) than that for crossbreds (1.72). Respondents were quite knowledgeable about most of the farm management practices except breeding. Facilities of the farm are good, no problems were observed regarding labor management relationship. Economic analysis of the farm showed a net total income of Php1,650,343.05 after two years of actual dairy operation
