Dried poultry manure and leucaena in rice straw-based with blended diets for dairy heifers; 3: lactation phase

Twenty Holstein x Red Sindhi yearling heifers were randomly alloted to 4 treatments in a randomized complete block design to study the supplementary values of dried poultry manure (DPM) and ipil-ipil leaf meal (ILM) in rice straw-based blended diets. Rice straw maintained at 35% of the total dry matter in all treatments and concentrate portions were varied as follows: Diet 1 - 45% ILM + 20% others; Diet 2 - 30% ILM + 15% DPM + 20% others; Diet 3 - 22.5% ILM + 22.5% DPM + 20% others; and Diet 4 - 65% others. The levels of concentrate given were adjusted to make all the 4 diets isonitrogenous and isocaloric. No significant differences were found in Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and organic matter digestibility among the treatment means. Nevertheless, Diet 4 was relatively more digestible than those containing ILM and/or DPM. Intakes of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and energy were highest with Diet 2 and lowest with Diet 4 (P.05). Only the difference in liveweight changes between Diets 1 and 4 was significant (P.05). No significant differences were observed in the weight of calves born to experimental cows among the treatment means. No significant differences in milk production, length of lactation, fat corrected milk (FCM) and persistency were observed. Diet 2 was found less efficient (P.05) compared to the 3 other diets in terms of feed and energy conversion efficiencies. Differences in butter fat, protein and solid non-fat contents were not significant. Total solid content was higher in diet 3 compared to Diet 4 (P.05). Furthermore, no significant differences were found in flavor, off-flavor and overall acceptance of milk produced from the 4 treatment groups. Best reproduction performance was obtained from Diet 3. Economic evaluation revealed no significant differences for total feed cost and income over feed cost for both commercial and backyard scales production. However, Diet 3 showed highest net income records.
