Fruit variability and correlation of various characters: 2 cashew and jackfruit

Morphological fruit characters of 121 cashew and 28 jackfruit tree selections were evaluated and analyzed. In cashew, wide variations, were observed in many fruit characters including: fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness, nut length, nut width, kernel width and percent edible portion, while narrower variations were found in nut weight, kernel weight, kernel length, kernel thickness, shell weight, shell thickness and total soluble solids. Correlation analysis showed that fruit weight was highly correlated with fruit length (r=0.79), width (r=0.93), and thickness (r=0.92), while fruit width is highly correlated with fruit thickness (r=0.99). In terms of nut characters, weight is highly correlated with kernel weight (r=0.85), shell weight (r=0.96) and shell thickness (r=0.77), while shell weight is highly correlated with shell tickness (r=0.81). For jackfruit, wide variations were also observed in several characters, including fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width and fruitlet weight, while narrower variations, existed in fruitlet length, fruitlet width, fruitlet thickness, total soluble solid and percent edible portion. Fruit weight is highly correlated with fruit length (r=0.84) and fruit width (r=0.82), while fruit width is highly correlated with fruitlet length (r=0.84). In terms of fruitlet characters, weight with seed is highly correlated with fruitlet weight without the seed (0.98), fruitlet length (r=0.76) and fruitlet width (r=0.87). Fruitlet weight without the seed was higly correlated with the fruitlet width (r=0.85). These results will be useful in breeding by mass selection method particularly in the selection of superior trees.
