[Effect of high temperatures during grain filling in soft and hard wheat in southern Portugal]

In Portugal rising temperatures occuring during and after anthesis are extremely common. High temperatures in those late phases of wheat development shorten the duration of grain filling reducing individual kernel weight and, consequently, decreasing grain yield. This problem becomes more relevant when the wheat crop is under irrigation where the water stress is not a factor limiting wheat yield. In this study, bread and durum wheat genotypes were sowing in field conditions and exposed under contrasting thermic regime. Results pointed out that temperatures have a negative effect on individual kernel weight by shortening rate and duration of grain filling period. Relative value of yield components were also modified by heat stress. The performance of the genotypes used in this study revealed to be dependent of their origin and selection history
