Production and persistance of simple and complex grass/clover mixtures

Dry matter production and persistence of simple and complex grass/clover mixtures were evaluated in conditions of central part of the Slovak Republic in three-cut (variants a-j) and five-cut systems (variants k-n). More complex mixtures were composed of intergeneric hybrid Felina, red clover and white clover which were completed by other grass species and varieties. The lowest dry matter production (during seven years 1991-1997 was found at original seminatural sward under three-cut system (5.83 t.ha-1) and at variant f (5.84 t.ha-1). Dry matter production of variant a (7.29 t.ha-1) was significantly highest (LSD 0.01) in comparison with seminatural sward and variant f. Annual dry matter production of other mixtures varied from 6.05 to 7.15 t.ha-1. Weather conditions of different years influenced considerably dry matter production - the lowest production 3.35 and 5.38 t.ha-1was found in 1993 and 1992 the significantly highest production 8.01 and 8.23 t.ha-1 was found in 1994 and 1997. The original seminatural sward (control) under five-cut system also showed the lowest annual dry matter yield (3.26 t.ha-1). Significantly higher (LSD 0.01) annual yield was found at mixtures l and m 4.57 and 5.01 t.ha-1. The lowest dry matter production 2.46 t.ha-1 was in 1993. In years and 1991 the annual yields were significantly (LSD 0.01) higher - 5.0 and 5.32 t.ha-1. Intergeneric hybrids Felina and Hykor and species Arhenatherum elatiusm Dactylis glomerata, Lolium perenne and Alopecurus pratensis (participating mainly on dry matter production of the 1st and 2nd cut) showed the highest persistence.
