The development of morphological structures of rumen epithelium and papillae in calves weaned at different age were studied. Calves in group 1 (late weaning) were fed milk feed mixture Salvana, feed mixture and meadow hay according to the standard (Tab.1). Calves in group 2 (early weaning) were fed milk feed mixture to 6th week of age, and the feed mixture and meadow hay to 9th week. All calves were slaughtered in 9th week of age and samples from rumen wall and ventral ruminal sac were taken. Statistically significantly (P0.1) longer (1.87 mm) and wider (0.71 mm) were the papillae of rumen wall in calves weaned in 6th week of life (group 2, Tab.2), however, their number per square cm mucosa was lower (92) than in calves weaned in 9th week of life (140). The most important parameter which characterizes the level of rumen development, area of papillae per square cm mucosa, was also higher in earlier weaned calves (241 square mmper square cm - group 2) compared with later weaned calves (232 square mm per square cm - group 1). The study of morphological differences of mucosa relief in ventral ruminal sac showed in later weaned calves (group 1, fig. 1a, b) that the rumen epithelium was characterized with lamellar keratinised cells of A type in Stratum corneum. Keratinised cells of B type arose from these deep keratinised cells
