Bark substrates - new possibilities of their use in modern nursery-growing technologies

An intensive research after the possibilities of substitution of other materials for peat, especially waste bark, has been carried out in nursery-advanced countries for many ages. Our department (Department of Breeding and Propagation of Horticultural Plants, Faculty of Horticulture, Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Lednice, Czech Republic) has engaged in this problem, too. A growing technology brought in and experimentally verified by us solves a basic problem of bark substrates - easy and fast drying of substrate and unbalanced nutrition of woody plants. The basis of technology is the growing of woody plants in bark substrates using a modern irrigation system, Czech storage fertilizers based on little soluble salts (Silvamix Forte) and a special hydroabsorption soil conditioner (TerraCottem). This growing technology was experimentally verified in the taxons Alnus, Malus, Buxus, Thuja, Fraxinus, Salix
