Issues of making access to mountainous forests as a basis for their rational management are presented. Actual needs of solving existing forest transportation network are given. The situation in forest roads in Slovakia is described and the problems of making access to mountainous forests are discussed. Making rational access to forests and forest complexes is aimed at optimal location and structure of respective communications and transportation equipment on a given territory in a way to reach the best possible access to the given area with the shortest possible skidding distance, the least possible number of constructed kilometers of roads and transportation routes as well as minimal involvement of production area
