Effect of the duration of the relay cropping period in maize rainfed cropping system on cotton yield elaboration and insect pest populations

Maize-cotton relay cropping system was studied under rainfed conditions to search for and appropriate relay cropping period and the effect on insect pest population in this systems. The experiment was carried out during May 1993 - January 1994 at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center. There were 4 relay cropping periods under investigation: 0, 15, 30 and 45 days before baby corn, harvest. The results revealed that yield and yield components of baby corn were higher in the 30 days relay cropping period; husked and dehusked ear yielded 7,073 and 937 kg/ka, respectively 33 and 32 percent higher than in sole maize planting. In the 45 days relay cropping period, it was found that both husked and dehusked yield were affected, 5 and 8 percent lower than sole maize planting, repectively. Cotton yield in sole cotton planting system was the highest, 1,890 kg/ha, but not significantly different from the other treatments. The effect of the relay period on insect populations did not show any difference, as populations were very low in early season.
