Allelopathic effect of Typha augustifolia on the growth of Mimosa pigra

Flowers of Typha augustifolia were extracted with 70 percent methanol and distilled water in comparison. When the aqueous extracts obtained from both methanol and distilled water were tested for their effect on germination of the seeds of Mimosa pigra, the results showed inhibition by both extracts. Evidences from chemical tests and absorption spectra suggested the presence of condensed tannins in both water and 70 percent methanol resulted in light brown precipitates. When the seeds of Mimosa pigra were grown in the presence of various concentrations of the light brown precipitates, the results showed complete inhibition by the precipitates obtained from 70 percent methanol aqueous extracts. On the other hand, precipitates from aqueous water extracts resulted in partial inhibition. The results imply that, condensed tannins in Typha augustifolia exerted allelopathic effect on the germination of the seeds of Mimosa pigra, and the inhibitory effect was shown to be concentration dependent.
