Detoxicative effect of aqueous leef extract of Thunbergia lauriforia Linn. On paraquat induced oxidative toxicity in rats were examined by using three parameters: the number of surviving animals; the concentration of malonaldehyde (MDA) as indicates of lipid peroxidation; change in plasma concentration of vitamin E. Rats were induced toxic by intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) and were divided into three groups; paraquat with coadministration of water (control group), with hot water leaf extract and with water leaf extract groups. Plant extract was prepared for feeding (1.2 mg/kg) three times: 1 hour before paraquat administration and two more times over an 3 hour interval. The effect of plant extract on paraquat-induced mortality was study in rat received paraquat 70 mg/kg (LD50=67 mg/kg). The number of surviving animals was counted 24 hours after paraquat administration. Plant extract treated groups were survived more than control group (p0.01). The effect of plant extract on plasma malonaldehyde (MDA) and vitamin E level in rat received paraquat 60 mg/kg were also studied. Both of plant extract treatment resulted in a decrease in plasma malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration significantly difference from the level found in control groups (p0.01), while no sigificant difference were observed in plasma concentration of vitamin E among 3 groups groups (p0.05). These result suggest that an aqueous leaf extract of Thunbergia lauriforia Linn. Confers marked detoxication against paraquat induced toxiced toxicity in rats.
