In the first part of paper, characteristics of plant oils, rapeseed, soybean and sunflower, are analyzed from aspect of their use as fuels for diesel engines. Most important characteritics of plant oils and diesel D2 are compared, with accent given on change of their viscosity with temperature. Also, proposal of German standard (DIN) for rapeseed oils that can be used as fuels in diesel engines is given. In the second part of paper methylesters of plant oils characteristics are analyzed, especially oils of rapeseed, as fuels for diesel engines. Some European standards for biodiesel: Austria's standard OENORM C 1190 for methylesters of rapeseed and German standard for biodiesel DIN V 51606 are presented as well. At the end in table form comparative characteritics for pure oil of rapeseed, methylester of rapeseed and diesel fuel are given.
