The genetic variability and correlation of grain yield and yield components in the NSB maize synthetic after five cycles of S1 and HS (A632) recurrent selection were investigated. Two independent trials were established (one for S1 and one for HS families) for all four cycles under study (C0, C1, C3, C5) according to the Nested design (an incomplete block design with replications within the sets). The five cycles of S1 and HS recurrent selection brought about a significant increase of grain yield, number of rows per ear, ear length, grain depth and 1000-grain mass. In the S1 progeny, the highest correlation was found between 1000-grain mass and grain depth in C5 (r(g)=0.638*]. Grain yield was strongly correlated with ear length in C5 (r(g)=0.684*], grain depth in C0 (r(g)=0.709*] and 1000-grain mass in C5 (r(g)=0.684*]. Grain depth was found to have the largest direct influence on grain yield via 1000-grain mass in C3 (0.351) and C5 (0.341). In the HS progeny, the most prominent was the interdependence of grain depth and number of rows per ear in C0 (r(g)=0.590*]. In the initial cycle, grain yield was strongly correlated with grain depth (r(g)=0.679*] and 1000-grain mass (r(g)=0.778*]. 1000-grain mass had the largest direct effect on grain yield in all the cycles. The greatest indirect influence on grain yield was exerted by grain depth via 1000-grain mass in C3 (0.408) and C5(0.379).
