Geologic heritage of Serbia (Yugoslavia) is rich with variety of objects because of its peculiar geological structure. It makes a significant portion of the natural assets that need to be protected. Since 1949, the Institute for Protection of Nature has placed under protection 80 objects of geological heritage. After initiative of the ProGEO - European Association for Protection of Geological Heritage, in 1995 was established the National Committee for Protection of Geological Heritage, the main objective of which is to identify and make inventories of geological heritage sites.
