Towards sugar beet sounder and saver | Produire des betteraves plus saines et plus propres

Richard-Molard, M. (Institut technique francais de la Betterave industrielle, Paris (France))
There are two contradictory aims for pest and disease control in beet growing: improving the sound of the beet while reducing the impact on the environment and giving better consumer guarantees. To do this, research must develop along three main axes: Identification of the resistance or tolerance features to be built up in the varieties used, by developing breeding techniques using markers and biotechnologies in general. This chiefly involves rhizomania, nematodes, cercospora and rhizoctonia. Considerable development of the use of tolerant varieties is expected in Europe in the very near future, particularly on rhizomania. Development of the epidemiological knowledge needed to assist genetics researchers and breeders in their work and guide growing practices in the direction of techniques which combat disease. Perfection of the rules governing plant protection product use to give consumers greater guarantees: defining treatment thresholds, particularly for leaf diseases like cercospora, powdery mildew.
