Drillability test and research of sugar beet seed in the Netherlands
2001
Linden, J.P. van der (Institute of Sugar beet Research, Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands))
In the Netherlands, sugar industry sells and distributes the seed. They guarantee a certain quality of the seed. One of the requirements is good drillability. The IRS controls this aspect. Each seed lot is analysed before distributing the seed. The drills Kverneland Accord Monozentra SP, the Kverneland Accord Monopill and the Hassia Exakta-S are involved in the test. Approved seed has a minimum of 95/ of the cells containing one seed and maximum 2/ may be broken. Seed drops on a microphone and a computer analyses the sound. Broken seeds are visually analysed. Besides this test the IRS studies the drillability of the commercial seed on other sugar beet drills. The goal of the drillability test is to ensure the guaranteed requirements and to avoid problems in practice. With the result of the drillability research we want to support the improvement of drillability by both breeders and drill manufacturers.
