Research and development are intense in the field of seed treatment with pesticides. To assure an optimal efficacy against pathogenic diseases and pests each seed and so each plant has to be correctly treated. Good quality seed treatment with plant protection products involves that the average concentration of active substance on seeds has to be as close as possible to the target (registered) dose rate and that the distribution of the active substance on individual seeds has to be uniform. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of active substances on seeds is usually carried out by Gas Chromatography (GC) or High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) after extraction of the active substance by appropriate solvent. These reference methods permit to determine active substances on seeds with good specificity, sensitivity, accuracy and precision. These methods can be easily used to determine the average concentration of the active substance on a seed batch. But for the analysis of the homogeneity of a batch a lot of individual seeds has to be analysed and so these reference methods become costly and time consuming. Since several years the Agricultural Research Centre of Gembloux (Quality of Agricultural Products Department in collaboration with Pesticides Research Department) carries out research on the use of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) for the analysis of pesticides on seeds. Being a fast and non-destructive technique NIR seems to be well suited for the monitoring of seeds batches, to identify the active substance in the seed coating and to determine its concentration and homogeneity. This paper presents the results of a study relative to the determination of imidacloprid on sugar beet pelleted seeds by NIR.
