Weed control in sugarbeet in Morocco
2001

Weeds are the major handicap to sugarbeet development in Morocco. Many studies were conducted to identify sugarbeet weeds, to determine critical competition periods, to identify weed control methods and to evaluate sugarbeet selective herbicides efficacy. Most frequent weed species in sugarbeet fields belong to Parsley, Sunflower, Pea, Grass, Pink, Mustard, Poppy, and Goosefoot families. Experiments carried out at Doukkala and Tadia areas showed that sugarbeet is very sensitive to weed competition at early stages. In fact, weed control delayed 4 to 8 weeks after emergence caused more than 15 percent sugarbeet yield loss. No weed control over the whole season reduced sugarbeet yield more than 80 percent compared to weed free check. Surveys done in sugarbeet areas pointed out that manual and mechanical weed control are still the weed control methods frequently used by sugarbeet farmers. The use of chemical weed control is still very limited. Studies conducted in different Moroccan regions showed that chemical control increased sugarbeet yield 30 to 80 percent. However, one herbicide application did not give satisfactory weed control due to large number of weed species present at the time of application and weed seed germination spreading. Other works concerning dose splitting and herbicides sequences gave good to excellent control of large weed flora spectrum.
