An analysis of the production parameters over the last 20 years in France has revealed some major changes in both disease management and crop growth rhythms. On the one hand, this has provided information on disease development, the reply by genetics and thoughts on future requirements for tolerance, in particular regarding rhizomania, nematodes, rhizoctonia, virus yellows and leaf diseases. On the other hand, an analysis of the growth curves shows that improvements in yield per hectare were mainly obtained during the first part of the cycle, before 1st August, whereas no improvement was obtained during the second period, from 1st August to harvesting, which nevertheless represents 50/ of the sugar build-up. An analysis of the limiting factors which come into play is carried out with the help of the Sucros II growth model on the series of data for 1988-1999 to assess in particular the incidence of climatic stress and to identify the requirements in terms of genetic improvement.
