[Taking extractions to produce a non selective herbicide resistant sugar beet seeds] | Mesures complementaires a prendre en vue de la production de semences tolerantes a un herbicide non selecif
2000
Chazallon, G. (Novartis Seeds, Nerac (France))
The production of seeds resistant to a non selective herbicide should meet a very precise production procedure in order to secure : A high level of quality required by the market; To avoid the introduction of the transgene into classical varieties and its spreading in the ecosystem. Since the introduction of genetic monogerm varieties beginning of the seventies, sugar beet seeds used by European growers have been produced mainly in France and in Italy within very restricted areas. In France, a technical regulation law issued by the Ministry of Agriculture describes the frame within to carry out the controls from field multiplication to seeds certification that allows their trading. The excellence of high quality level is achieved thanks to the different actions undertaken (cultural management, control of production areas through interprofessional consultation). The current pollen flow trials will define the distance of isolation recommended for the multiplication between GMO and non GMO varieties. A specific attention will be drawn to the control of GMO seeds waste in order to eliminate the risk of spreading of the gene throughout the ecosystem. The seeds trace-ability and complementary purity controls made along the various key production steps will allow to deliver seeds meeting required standards.
