Perennial ryegrass and white clover: which varieties for continuous grazing? | Ray-grass anglais et trefle blanc: quelle varietes pour la pature continue?
2002
Mosimann, E. (Station federale de recherches en production vegetale de Changins (RAC), Nyon (Switzerland))
Trials at four sites compared 36 combinations of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) composed from different varieties. The swards have been continuously grazed by dairy cows for four years. Botanical analyses and sward height measurements allowed a clear description of the grazing ability of white clover cultivars. The white clover proportion was best controlled with the combination of small-leaved (1/3) and large-leaved (2/3) varieties. On the other hand, differences between ryegrass varieties were more difficult to explain. However the early diploid variety Arion and the late tetraploid variety Pastoral have shown the best grazing ability.
