The article outlines the biology of Agrotis ipsilon and presents a comparative study of light and pheromone traps. Due to the significant fluctuation of the sex-ratio, the first technique reports better the activity of the pest. A method based upon the sum of the temperatures above 10°C is used to begin visual monitoring in fields. A simple method to estimate the potential damage on maize is proposed. The method integrates captures, weather data, and tolerance levels according to the phenological growth stage of maize.
