The occurrence of moulds producing aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in raisins was monitored from 1999 to 2001. The raisins were purchased in 12 different towns in the Czech Republic, handled and stored the same way as usual consumers do. As all samples were contaminated by Aspergillus niger, they were tested to ochratoxin A occurrence. The concentration of this mycotoxin varied from 1 to 63.6 microg/kg. The average values were 6 microg/kg in 1999, 1.8 microg/kg in 2000, and 7.7 microg/kg in 2001. Accute or chronic expositions to ochratoxin A (absorbed from different sources) by the Czech population has also been confirmed by blood analyses of blood donators carried out in several Czech districts since 1994. As shown by these analyses, ochratoxin A concentrations in blood serum vary from 0.1 to 13.7 microg/L.
