Pathoanatomical diagnosis and microscopic examination of 53 aquarium fishes was performed by Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Granulomatous lesions, showing tuberculosis changes were observed in 27 fishes, of which 19 were microscopically acid-fast bacilli (AFB) positive. No granulomatous alterations were found in the 26 remaining fishes. However, AFB were found in 3 fishes. Another 17 fishes with pathoanatomical lesions were examined and ACB were observed in 8 of them. Consequent cultivation showed that 7 of them were culture positive. Microscopic findings revealed massive AFB occurrence in 2 other animals, both were culture positive. Three out of the 7 microscopic negative fishes were culture positive. Furthermore, Mycobacterium fortuitum was isolated from 8 samples of plants, molluscs, detritus and water collected in one aquarium. Despite this, there were no clinical symptoms of mycobacteriosis in fish living in this aquarium. Our results show that cultivation specifies routine diagnostics of mycobacterioses in fish.
