House and garden plants - risk of poisonings in small animals

This article summarizes some of the most important house and garden plant species which can cause poisoning in dogs, cats, cage birds, rodents, and other domestic animals. The most important species of the big family of Araceae, containing non-soluble calcium oxalate crystals, irritating mucous membranes, releasing also kinins and histamine, are presented. Rhododendron spp. (Ericaceae) contains mainly grayanotoxins, dangerous because of their cardioactive effects. Nerium oleandr (Apocynaceae) is very dangerous because of its digitoxinlike glycosides. Amaryllis belladona and Narcissus spp. (Amaryllidaceae), Tulipa spp. and Hyacynthus spp. (Liliaceae) are known for their poisoneous roots. Clinical symptoms of poisoning by individual plant species and their specific treatment in small animals are described.
