The aim of this study was to evaluate arsenic concentrations in 42 common breams and 31 perches catched in selected sites of the Elbe river (Czech Republic), and in 23 common breams and 20 perches from Elbe backwaters. Fish were catched in 1999 and in 2000. Their tissues (muscles, liver, kidney, gonads) were mineralized in autoclave and As concentrations were measured using MHS-20 apparatus with AAS Z-5000. As concentrations varied according to the locality and fish organ, but they were always below the hygienic limit value, i.e. 1 mg/kg. No significant linear relationship was found between As concentration in fish tissues and fish weight or age. The effect of sex on As concentration in muscles, liver and kidneys was not significant, but differences were observed between eggs and milt, As concentrations in bream eggs from Elbe backwaters having been in almost all cases significantly lower than those in milt.
