Field trials were carried out at Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute and glycoalkaloid (GA) content of potato tubers was estimated at Tartu Department of Central Laboratory of Estonian Health Protection Inspectore in 1999. Samples of potato tubers of different varieties were collected at different seasons to find out dependence of GA content on the maturity of potato tubers, varieties, tuber fractions and different harvest and storage seasons. The results of study indicated that different content of GA does exist on different potato varieties. A new Jogeva breed 1370-94 had the lowest content of GA at different harvest and storage times. The varieties 'Ants', 'Anti' and 'Mats' had the highest content of GA. The results indicated that concentration of GA in the tubers of late potato varieties was higher than in the early varieties. Highest content of GA was found in a small (35 mm) potato fraction. As 1999 was the first year of Ga studies in Estonia and the concentration depends on several factors, there is a lack of data for drawing out final conclusion. Therefore the study continues
