The paper analyses the successes and failures of forest tree breeding and forest seed management in Estonia. Regular research on forest tree breeding in Estonia started in 1957 when comparison was launched between the progeny of stands with different productivity levels. After thirty years of research, it was observed that the progeny are significantly influenced by the mother tree habitat while their breast height diameter may be considerably impacted by the mother tree age. A significant correlation was observed between the mother tree height and diameter and the progeny diameter. Research has been performed on the inner-species variability of common spruce, the influence of geographical provenance on spruce needle morphology and common spruce progeny growth the different sylvicultural properties of the rough-barked and the smooth-barked spruce, the occurrence of spruce forms distinguished by seed scale shape, etc. Stand density and productivity proved to be among those survey indicators that were strongly influenced by heredity whereas stock of timber, predominant height and mean breast height diameter proved to be moderately influenced and the predominant diameter little influenced by heredity
