Use of quick test for measuring soil nitrogen vegetable fields
2001
Aaltonen, M. (Agrifood Research Finland, Paelkane (Finland). Haeme Research Station)
In sustainable outdoor vegetable production, environmentally acceptable cultivation methods should include nitrogen tests from the soil and insect monitoring. Nitrogen tests are used to prevent overload of nitrate nitrogen in the plant material and nitrogen leaching from the root zone. Farmers who are getting environmental subsidies from the state are obliged to keep records of their fields. In those records they must give reasons if using more fertilizers than in average recommendations. The use of fertilizers for vegetables should be reduced by 10-20 per cent by means of a crop rotation plan and soil analyses. In this study, results are presented on the observed nitrate and ammonium nitrogen contents in coarse sandy soils during the growing seasons 1997-2000. Carrot, cabbage and onion were grown in cultivar trials conducted at the Haeme Research Station, in Paelkaene
