2002
Kasesalu, H. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Forest Research Inst.)
Serbian spruce is a relict of tertiary period. At present it grows in a relatively small area in the Balkan Peninsula. In the Baltic countries that species was introduced at the end of the 19th century. In Estonia the first Serbian spruces were planted in the 1890's in the manor parks of Taagepera and Olustvere. In the 1930's Serbian spruce was introduced in the Forestry Training District of Tartu University at Jaervselja. At present the maximum height of Serbian spruce in this district is 26 m and the maximum DBH 44 cm. During some decades transplants from the seeds of these trees were cultivated in the local nursery and introduced in many districts of Estonia. At present relatively young Serbian spruces grow in many gardens, parks and arboretums of Estonia. At Jaervselja Serbian spruce was also planted as a forest culture on small areas. Serbian spruce is a very ornamental tree species. It is relatively narrow-crowned, immune to fungus diseases and insect damages, frost-hardy. Being tolerant to smoke, it can be succesfully cultivated in towns and industrial centres. This conifer species is indulgent to soil. Serbian spruce begins to bear fruit early and quite often produces seed. The seeds are of relatively good quality. In autumn 2000 the sizes of cones and seed quality of Serbian spruce were researched at Jaervselja. This tree has perspective in green areas and park forests cultivation in Estonia
