On-farm fertilizer trial on faba bean and field pea around Holetta

On-farm participatory soil fertility management experiments were carried out in 1999 and 2000 to determine optimum NP fertiliser rate for faba bean on dilla and field pea production on dimile soils, as classified by farmers at Welmera and Hala Gojo. In 1999 three fertilizer rates (0-0, 9-23, and 18-46 kg N-P subscript of 2 O subscript of 5 ha-1) was added were studied. In the following year one additional level (27-69 kg N-P subscript of 2 O subscript of 5 ha-1) was added. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with two replications per site on 'five farmers' fields for faba bean and three for field pea on a plot size of 10m x 10m. Fertiliser was applied during planting. The popular cultivars CS 20-Dk for faba bean and Tegegnech for field pea were broadcasted at the rate of 200 and 150 kg ha-1, respectively. Planting was done during farmers sowing time from 25 June to 3 July in both years. Grain yields of both faba bean and field pea were significantly (P0.05) affected by the application of NP fertiliser. The application of 18-46 kg N-P subscript 2 O subscript 5 ha-1 increased seed yields of faba bean and field pea by about 60% and 59% in 1999 and 50% and 143% in 2000 crop seasons, respectively, over the control. In addition, aboveground biomass, plant height and number of pods per plant were positively influenced due to NP fertiliser application.
