A preliminary study with common bean variety Coco blanc, widely cultivated in Mediterranean zones, had shown that this genotype expressed a low growth potential and N2 fixation in conditions of salinity and phosphorus deficiency. In order to identify the most essential criteria involved in sensitivity of symbiotic N2 fixation to salinity and phosphorus deficiency, the physiological behaviour of local variety was compared to that of BAT 477, a line selected for its adaptation to drought and fertility soil. Plants inoculated with efficient strain of Rhizobium (CIAT 899) were grown on nutrient solution differed by phosphorus level (limited or optimal, respectively 60 and 360 micro mol/plant/week) and NaCl doses (5, 20 mM). Some plants supplied with urea were used as control in order to evaluate maximal growth potential for various treatments. Results showed that at vegetative stage, Coco blanc variety was significantly more sensitive to salinity and phosphorus deficiency than BAT 477. Some morphological (preferential root development, higher development of nodule) and physiological (best phosphorus utilisation efficiency, nodule activity little affected by salt) criteria were involved in the tolerance of BAT 477 to these nutritional constraints
