In order to increase the yield of grain legumes and to assess the effect of nitrogen fixation on the production, nodulation surveys were performed in areas of traditional cultivation of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum), and multilocal rhizobial inoculation and nitrogen fertilisation trials were performed under rainy cultivation or irrigation with water having salt contents of 0.75 and 2.75 g/l. The observations show that the nodule number for chickpea during vegetative growth varied considerably (3 to 21 nodules/plant) from one site to another within a production area. They increased generally until the flowering stage in the regions of Beja and Nabeul. By contrast they decreased surprisingly between both stages in the regions of Jendouba and Bizerte. The nodulations was much higher in chickpea than in common bean for which nodulation was completely absent or very low. Surprisingly in the later case, nodules disappeared before the flowering stage. The inoculation of common bean with specific native (Rafraf) or collection rhizobia (CIAT 899) had no effect on yield either with Coco blanc or BAT 477 cultivars
