Following the appearance of fire blight caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora (Burill) Winslow et al. in Hungary (Hevesi 1996) we have started research with the aim to screen domestic gene sources, mostly traditional old Hungarian varieties for disease resistance. We also worked with hybrids that have displayed considerable resistance to the fungal pathogens apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), and powdery mildew (Podosphera leucotricha). These hybrids were selected for further experiments on assessment of resistance to fire blight. Evaluation of resistance has been traditionally done by assessment of disease symptoms. In this study we evaluated disease severity (disease rating) and speed of disease development and spread.
